The Rotary Club of Pattaya has been supporting Pattaya Handicapped School, by donating computers and other equipment. We would like to continue that support by implementing various projects meeting actual needs at the school.
The Redemptorist Vocational School for the Disabled opened in 1984 with just four students. Today there are over 220 young Thai adults with disabilities learning a trade that will allow them to become independent and useful members of society.
The School, which is known as "Mahathai" accepts students that are unable to afford any other vocational school, so the majority of the students come from very poor backgrounds. They are not asked to pay for anything: the education, accommodation, food, medical assistance, sports facilities and after school activities, such as computer, dance, music, art, chess and English clubs are all free.
All that is asked of the students is that they study hard. For the majority of the students this is the only chance they will have to learn a trade that will give them a chance to lead independent lives.
One of the amazing things about this school is that 90% of the Thai teachers have disabilities themselves. They are the perfect people to show the new students that people with disabilities can lead 'normal' lives.
