Computers for Schools and Womens Prison

In early 2007 the Rotary Club of Pattaya proudly joined with the Rotary Club of Cheungpyung, Korea in a Rotary Foundation matching grant project to provide new Computers to two local schools outside Pattaya along with the Chonburi Womens Prison.

The project provided 10 computer sets to The Wat Sawang Arom School and 10 to the Ban Santikarm School.
Both schools already had some computers but they were very old and were in various states of disrepair and were not suitable for upgrading. The new computers will help the young children who are taught at these schools to learn vital skills that they will need in their lives.

In addition to providing the new computers the Rotary Club of Pattaya is also hoping to assist with the training of the students in computer use.

The computers were presented to the schools on Wednesday 27 June 2007.

The first school was Wat Sawang Arom Temple School where all the Rotarians were welcomed by Principal Adul, teachers, school children and some parents.

Both schools were given 10 computers with accessories and certificates that explained the purpose of the donation. During the presentaions President Niels explained that it is better to give a fishing rod rather than a fish as to give a fish means that someone can eat for one meal but to give a fishing rod someone can find food many times. He said that in todays world by providing computers we are allowing someone to learn how to obtain a living for the rest of their lives.

All the students and teachers at both of the schools experssed their great appreciation in this kindness and will make use of the computers for the children’s education.

In addition to the computers for the schools the project also provided 10 computer sets to Chonburi Womens Prison.
On Thursday 28th June 2007 President Niels and other members of the Rotary Club of Pattaya visited Chonburi Womens Prison and donated 10 Computer sets.
We arrived at the prison and were welcomed by Director Khun Kanlayanee Chanma and staff. There, 10 computers with accessories were donated. The prison already has a Computer Class but all of the computers were borrowed from a local college. These loned machines will now be returned to the college for their students to use. The new computers will be used to teach the prison inmates how to use a computer and as such give them a chance to get a computer related job after being released from their prison term.
This way Rotary is helping the inmates in the Chonburi Women’s Prison to change their life to something positive.

Following the presentation the members of the Rotary Club of Pattaya were taken on a tour of the prison. We were shown the various activities that the inmates perform. These include education, music and dance, manufacturing clothing, electrical componants, footware, giftware and many more items that are sold by the prison.
All of the Rotarians were very impressed by the standards maintained at the prison. We even sampled the lunch that was about to be served to the inmates and were suitably impressed by the quality and nutritional value of it.
